Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman to be seated as a congresswoman in the year 1968. She was also the first woman and African American to contest for the highest office in the nation from one of the two major political parties in 1972. She once said, “I want to be remembered as a woman…who dared to be a catalyst of change.”
