Centre Convocation: Supporting Emerging Researchers in STEM

WHAT: Centre BSC and LSAMP sponsored convocation featuring Dr. Iris Wagstaff.

WHEN: Monday, March 15, 2021 – 7:00pm (virtual)

HOW: This event is the brainchild of Centre Black STEM Coalition members Princess Allotey ’21, Temi Haastrup ’24, Professor Demoranville and Dean Goldey. They collaborated during the fall to plan this convocation. Centre Black STEM Coalition (BSC) is collaborating with the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) to sponsor this convocation.

The official description of this convocation is as follows:

Dr. Iris Wagstaff is a Chemist, Keynote Speaker, STEM Policy Advisor, and Education/Diversity Consultant. She currently serves as a STEM Program Director in the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Department of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) where she manages a$15 Million Dollar portfolio focused on broadening participation in STEM, workforce development, and inclusive technology and innovation ecosystems. She served as a 2015-2017 AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow at the DOJ National Institute of Justice Office where she developed and led an agency-wide diversity and inclusion initiative. In this convocation, Dr Wagstaff will share information about her STEM journey including her challenges and achievements. Specifically, Dr Wagstaff will discuss her experience at AAAS and highlight the importance of supporting and empowering students from underrepresented groups interested in pursuing STEM fields.

The Centre Black STEM Coalition is happy to have a hand in our first sponsored Centre convocation as a newly formed official Centre College student organization. We hope to continue to bring inspiring speakers like Dr. Iris Wagstaff to Centre’s campus in the future.
